Overview
Scorpion Healthcare Built a Custom C# & .NET Web Application on a SQL Server Database to Manage the Website.
The Business Challenge
St Joseph Hospital approached Scorpion Healthcare with a desire to more effectively manage their website and the hundred of pages of content and images. Their previous website was too static and difficult to modify and organize effectively. Time and money were being wasted on what should have been a more dynamic and manageable process. When St. Joseph Hospital came to Scorpion Healthcare, they wanted to know if there was a way their website could be managed using only the skills required for such applications as Microsoft Word. St. Joseph Hospital wanted to add/edit/delete pages and images and do it all through the web. Not only that, they wanted the system to grow with their future needs.
System Requirements
- Simple User Interface
- Ability to Easily Add/Edit/Delete Pages
- Ability to Easily Add/Edit/Delete Images
- A Dynamic Menu System that Allowed for Hierarchical Structure of Pages and Sub Pages
- Quick Load Time of Pages and Images
- Support High Traffic to the Website
- Extensible Framework for Future Modifications
- An Ability to Support and Add New Page Templates to the System
- Secured Access to the Management Console to Prevent Vandals from Modifying the Website Content
The Solution
After defining the goals for the project, St. Joseph Hospital gave Scorpion Healthcare the challenge of completing the Content Management System in a little over two months. Their stakeholders wanted to see immediate results and they wanted to know if we could rise to the challenge and deliver this system on time and within budget. We assured them we were up for such a challenge and successfully completed this large undertaking on time and in budget.
How'd we do it? We started by evaluating their server environment and working with them to setup and install an IIS 6.0 Server and SQL Server 2000. These systems would form the backbone of the system and fit within the project budget. We chose SQL Server 2000 for its speed and tight integration with IIS and the .NET framework.
Next, we tackled the design of the content management system. Due to the tight timeframe and the required extensibility of the application, it was critical that we not waste any time on "fluff" code - we only had time for what worked. The .NET framework was used to construct the application because of the large library of available tools and code that we knew would save us hours of time on standard code such as security, database interoperability and interface design.
Once underway, we worked closely with St. Joseph Hospital to ensure that the application was progressing as they wanted. We setup a demonstration server where they could log on to check the progress and provide feedback that was immediately worked into the final project. The result was a large-scale custom application that was completed on time, within budget and exceeded the client's expectations.
